la première, ronde, sertie d'un panneau émaillé d'une éleveuse de pigeons, sur un fond émaillé de violet et guilloché de poids et striures, les bordures en perles d'émail blanc, poinçon de prestige français dont un poinçon de maître [?]J, la charge de Alaterre, la lettre date R et la décharge en tête d'oiseau pour or de 19 karat ; la seconde, en forme de cartouche, ornée de feuilles et accroche-coeurs en émail bleu translucide, gravée postérieurement d'un envoi, poinçon de ville de Hanau, du standard 14, le bord également numéroté No. 1692

the first, circular, inset with a painted enamel medallion of a pigeon fancier, transluscent purple ground over dots and reeding, opalescent beaded border, French prestige marks including maker's mark [?]J, charge mark of Julien Alaterre, date letter R and bird's head discharge mark for 19 carat gold; the second, cartouche form, decorated in translucent blue enamel with leaf tendrills, the lid with later presentation inscription, Hanau town mark, further struck 14 for 14ct gold, the rim engraved in script: No. 1692

Provenance

La seconde tabatière porte l'inscripton: 'April 1894 / commandatore Carlo Di Donato from Queen Victoria'. La Reine Victoria visita Florence en 1894 et il est probable que cette tabatière fût remise à Di Donato, chef de police de la région, pour le remercier de ses services de sécurité.

Condition

First: base panel with some clouding and scratching. Second: in good condition apart from minor scratching on the lid.

Catalogue Note

The inscription on the second reads: 'April 1894 / commandatore Carlo Di Donato from Queen Victoria'.

Queen Victoria visited Florence in 1894 and it is presumed that Di Donato, a prominent policeman, was given the box in gratitude for his help with security.
