Condition
The panel is flat, stable, cradled, and unbeveled. It is on a single piece of panel. A thin vertical crack approximately six inches long extends from the top edge in the middle of the picture. No retouches are surrounding the crack and it is stable. There is good retention of paint and detailing, especially in the fur and face of the sitter. UV reveals broad retouches in the background, but these retouches do not extend into the face of the sitter. They are visible to the naked eye as off purple paint strokes. These could possibly be removed and re-applied in a more even fashion which would blend in nicely with the pure grey background. Under the current varnish there are a few pin dot size retouches applied to the fur. The face and most of the fur are in a nice state of preservation with good coloration. In a carved and lacquered wooden frame.

Catalogue Note
At the time of the publication of her monograph on Amberger in 2004 (see Literature), Annette Kranz knew this portrait only from a very old black and white photograph. Based on her recent examination of a high resolution digital image, she now accepts this portrait as a work by Christoph Amberger.
Dr. Kurt Löcher, who has seen this painting firsthand, also confirmed the attribution and suggested a date of circa 1533.
