Estimate
30,000 - 50,000 USD
bidding is closed

Description

  • Nicolas de Largillièrre
  • Portrait of a Man
  • inscribed in an old hand on the reverse: Peint par N. de Largillierre / 1691 (on a piece of paper on the lined canvas, possibly a transcription of the original signature)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Mrs. Edward Kempner.

Exhibited

Washington, D.C., National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Instituion, 1962-1982 (as 'Portrait of Louis XV', loaned by Mrs. Edward Kempner).

Condition

The canvas is relined and in good condition. The paint surface is stable with a minor loss, upper right, and a scratch approximately 2 inches in length in the lower right corner. There is some thinness in the darks, particularly in the hair and shoulder, and the white collar is somewhat abraded, exposing the ground in areas but this does not affect the overall reading of the painting. Inspection under ultra violet light is somewhat obscured by cloudy varnish. There appear to be possible old, retouched losses to background and some more recent retouches to the hair on the right side. The face appears to be in good condition. The painting would benefit from a re-varnish and is offered in a carved, gilt wood frame.
