Provenance

In the possession of the family of the present owner for at least a century.

Condition

The flat, stable support, bevelled on all four edges, consists of two horizontal panels joined to the reverse. The paint surface is secure and generally in good condition under a dirty, yellowed varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some very minor scattered retouching works. Offered in gilt wood and plaster frame with some minor losses.

Catalogue Note

Another version of this view of the Overtoom, taken from the same viewpoint as the present work and dated 1664, is in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede (reproduced in L.J. Bol, Die Holländische Marinemalerie des 17. Jahrhunderts , Brunswick 1973, p. 317, fig. 320). The buildings to the left are the well known tea house De Plaats Royaal.
