Condition

THOMAS WEAVER STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be generally good condition. There is discoloured retouching to two old vertical tears in the upper right, one aprox. 20 cm. long, the other aprox. 5 cm. long. There is flaking and some minor paint loss in the upper right corner, and there is a small area of paint loss in the lower left. There is also a dark and discoloured varnish overall all. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the condition mentioned above and reveals no further signs of retouching. FRAME Held in a gold painted wooden frame. GEORGE HAIGH STRUCTURE The canvas has a firm lining. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is an area of unstable craquelure in the centre right, with scattered areas of minor paint loss where the pigment has begun to flake. These minor losses extend to the lower right corner of the picture, and along the lower right edge. There is also one small paint loss between the horse's back legs and a discoloured and dirty varnish overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some very minor old retouching to the upper right edge of the canvas, where it has been cut to the new lining, and to one very small area in the upper right corner. UV also confirms the opacity of the very dirty varnish and shows that there are no further retouchings. FRAME Held in a gold painted wooden frame.
