The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure if somewhat flattened under an old yellowed varnish. There is a large restored damage in the upper right corner. Scattered discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye and these are confirmed under UV light. Offered in a plain wooden frame in good condition.

An old copy after Seghers' presumed lost original known through Willem van Haecht's painting The Collection of Cornelis van der Geest in the Rubenshuis, Antwerp (see B. Nicolson, Caravaggism in Europe, Milan 1990, vol. I, p. 174, cat. no. 1434, reproduced vol. III, fig. 1434).
