Description

  • Johann Baptist Drechsler
  • Still life of flowers in an urn togther with cut roses in a glass vase upon a table in a niche
  • signed and dated lower right: Joh.Drechsler. f. 1802
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Hassfurther, 22 November 2004, lot 38, where bought by the parents of the present owner for 45,000 euros.

Condition

The painting is fresher and brighter than the catalogue illustration suggests. The signed and dated canvas has an old relining which is still taut, effective, and has not flattened the paint surface which appears clean in good condition with the impasto well preserved. The grapes lower left as well as a background leaf centre left have become a little flattened. The pigments still appear strong and vibrant. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some minor scattered strengthening in the background which are cosmetic rather than structural. Offered in a wood and plaster frame with some losses. The painting is in good condition and ready to hang.
