Catalogue Note

In the 2002 sale catalogue, the ship depicted was identified as the Staaten General, but it has not been possible to find any records to support this.  The faint inscription seems to end "...landia", and may possibly have read Hollandia or Zeelandia.  Various ships with these names are recorded, but none of the known portraits of them correspond with the details seen here, so no certain identification is possible.
