Condition
The tones of the original are a touch cooler than they appear in the catalogue illustration.
The canvas has an old loose relining.
The paint surface is secure and is generally in good condition under an old vanish.
Inspection under UV light reveals only a handful of tiny areas of retouching work and generally the paint surface shows signs of very little later intervention.
Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Jean de Julienne was an important collector and patron of the arts in 18th-century Paris. He had set out wanting to be an artist himself and had initially studied alongside Watteau, by whom he was to own some 450 drawings. The still life by Jan Davidsz. de Heem in the Evening session of this sale was probably owned by him (lot 37).
