  • a pair, both oil on canvas
  • Each 31cm by 48cm

Provenance

With Arthur Tooth, London.

Condition

The first (illustrated at the top in the catalogue) has a greener tonality in the sky, much more in line with the second. Otherwise the catalogue illustrations are representative. Both canvases have been relined and their paint surfaces appear to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for a very very minor old scratch stemming from top edge in the upper left in the second, which can be seen in the catalogue illustration. There is also what appears to be a yellowed varnish over both. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the varnish which impedes further inspection however there is evidence of old retouching around the edges of both, and a few strokes of old retouching in the boats, however the pictures appear to be in remarkably good condition. Offered in matching discoloured gilt wood frames which appear to be in good overall condition.
