Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has not been lined, but is starting to sag slightly and is in need of restretching. The paint surface appears to be in fair condition. There is an even craquelure visible overall in keeping with the paintings age, and there are a number of scattered very minor paint losses overall, caused by flaking which are most noticeable in the shadow on the side of the building on the right and in the green pigments of the foliage. The most notable loss is in the balustrade lower left, directly above the figure group, as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. There is also evidence of surface dirt and a yellow varnish overall. Also visible are a number of scattered minor flecks of retouching most noticeable in the lighter pigments of the sky and horizontally arranged by the fringes of the trees centre left. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the varnish and reveals several campaigns of retouching primarily concentrated (apart from some minor scattered cosmetic retouches elsewhere) in the architecture on the right, particularly in the darker pigments of the shadow. Offered in a decorative gilt wood and plaster frame with minor losses.
