Description

  • Jan Frans van Bloemen, called l'Orizzonte
  • A Roman landscape with a shepherd and his flock;A Roman river landscape with figures resting
  • a pair, both oil on canvas

Provenance

With Colnaghi, London (according to labels attached to the reverse of the frames).

Condition

The catalogue illustrations are representative. Both canvases have been relined and the paint surface on each appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. In a raking light there is some minor cosmetic retouching visible to the dark green pigments. In the first (illustrated on the left in the catalogue), this retouching is concentrated in the bush above the sheep which extends right along it's length. In the second (illustrated on the right in the catalogue), this is concentrated in the foliage centre left and to a greater extent in the blue of the sky upper right. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of these areas of retouching. In the first it also reveals retouching in the lower left, to a minor horizontal scratch measuring approx. 2cm upper right in the leaves and further minor scattered retouching in the sky upper left and in the foreground and figure. Examination of the second reveals some old faint infilling to the craquelure in the lower regions of the right hand bush and some very minor scattered areas of cosmetic retouching such as in the mountains and water. Offered in matching gilt and cream painted wood frames.

Catalogue Note

These are autograph variants of a pair of coppers by Van Bloemen in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, inv. nos. Sp. 319 and 320 (see A. Busiri Vici, Orizzonte, Rome 1974, unpaginated, cat. nos. 207 and 208). While the disposition of the figures and the trees in the foreground are very similar to the present works, the Copenhagen versions differ in the backgrounds.
