Description
- A hunting party in a forest
- oil on canvas
Condition
The picture is lighter in tone and richer in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The lined canvas is coarse and seems to consist of three vertical strips sewn together. The first divisory line is visible in a raking light and is located on the very left running up through the saddle of the side facing horse. The has two horizontal offshoots extending to the left canvas edge, the first being in the centre, the second in the dark mass of leaves at the top and these would imply that the eft most section of canvas is itself made up of three sections. The second vertical division is located in the centre and runs up through the side facing spotted dog. The paint surface appears to be in fair condition however the coarseness seems to be compounded by the lack of a properly applied ground layer. Otherwise there is evidence of a think varnish, surface dirt and a spidery craquelure overall. Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the presence of the discoloured varnish and reveals extensive retouching overall, particularly concentrated in the foreground frieze of figures, which consists mainly of cosmetic strengthening to the forms. Offered in a grand gilt wood frame in good overall condition.
