STRUCTURE The canvas has a firm lining. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition, with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is some minor abrasion in the lower section of the canvas, as well as some flecks of surface dirt. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals minor retouching to the lower section of the canvas, predominantly in background area in the lower left, to craquelure. There is also some minor infilling to craquelure in the sitter's hat. With the exception of these areas the painting appears to be largely untouched and there is an old and slightly opaque varnish overall.
