Description
- John Wootton
- Portrait of a Greyhound, called Pompon
- inscribed and dated lower right: Pompon 1746
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Paris, Palais Galliera, 31 March 1971, lot 35 (as attributed to Wootton).
Condition
The painting appear to be richer in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface has been pressed as a result. The paint surface however remains in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for two minor areas of damage visible in a raking light in the lower left , both measuring approx. 3 cm. in diameter. Elsewhere there is evidence of old discoloured retouching that is visible to the naked in the darker pigments, most notable in the upper and lower right as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals the presence of a thick discoloured varnish overall which makes further inspection difficult however it does reveal further scattered areas of old retouching throughout the foliage and the dog. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with minor losses.
