  • Portrait of a cartographer, standing in an interior, holding a map of the world
  • signed and dated on the map centre left: Iulius Pignatta pinxit. 1712
inscribed on the map: MAPPAMONDO O VERO CARTA GEN.LE ... / Rapresentato in due Planisferi / nuovamente corretta, in piĆ¹ parti, Aumentata
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The picture is slightly more muted than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas appears to be unlined and the signed and dated paint surface appears to be in good overall condition. There are minor scattered flake losses mainly concentrated in the lower peripheral areas as caused by an old craquelure, and two losses in the sitter's cuff most probably caused by a knock. There also appears to be a varnish and surface dirt overall in keeping with the paintings age. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals extensive retouching, mainly to the darker pigments throughout the background. It also reveals retouching to what appear to be three or four old vertical tears in the lower left., the largest measuring approx. 33 cm. There is also more minor retouching throughout the sitter's face and costume and strengthening to his cuff and the hair above his left shoulder. Offered in a gilt wood frame with scattered losses and woodworm.
