Description

  • The Pseudo-Guardi
  • A pair of still lifes of roses, anemones, tulips and other flowers in bronze urns, resting upon stone ledges
  • both oil on canvas, oval

Condition

Both pictures appear to be richer in colour and slightly lighter in tone than the catalogue illustrations would suggest. The canvases are coarse in weave and have been relined however the impasto remains intact in both. The paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint, however in both the darker pigments of the background landscapes and plinths have abraded slightly as can be seen in the catalogue illustrations. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a yellowed varnish and retouching throughout the sky in both pictures. There is also localised minor retouching to the canvas edges and to the aforementioned abrasion, however the principal parts of each i.e. the flowers, appear to be relatively untouched. offered in matching carved gilt wood frames on good overall condition.
