Marquês de Ficalho collection, 19th century;

Condition

The catalogue illustration is slightly too contrasted but the colours are quite accurate. The canvas has been relined and the surface appears somewhat flattened as a result, particularly in the darker tones which seem to have sunk a little. The painting seems to have been cleaned relatively recently as the varnish layer has not discoloured. The painting was hung too high to inspect under UV but most of the significant damages are visible to the naked eye: there is an old vertical canvas join running approx. 4 cm. from the right hand edge; a repaired tear in the background, to the right of his head (approx. 25cm.); a repaired tear on the man's right arm, sleeve and torso (approx. 25 x 10 cm. at longest points); further less significant damages (e.g. a repaired hole on his sleeve and a patch in the upper left background). Where there are no specific damages the paint surface appears to have survived quite well and doesn't show significant signs of wear. Scattered spots are visible in the darker areas, particularly in the lower parts of the painting, on the man's torso and in the background: these appar to be only in the varnish layer but they may affect the paint surface beneath. The painting could be hung as is, though it would benefit from some attention. The impressive carved gilt wood and plaster frame, with acanthus decoration, is in good condition except for a noticeable loss to the moulding on the inner edge lower right.
