Condition

The support consists of a single, stable flat panel which appears to have been thinned and was once cradled to the reverse. There appears to be an old horizontal split running in from the right-hand side of the panel through the seated man's neck but this has not broken through the paint surface. The paint surface is secure and in good condition with many of the original details and brushwork still visible. There darker brown pigments of the background and background figures are somewhat abraded. The varnish is matt and even and appears to impede thorough inspection under UV light although some old retouching is evident to the margins and some old strengthening to the door frame back centre. Offered in an octagonal frame of stained wood with faux tortoiseshell insets in good condition with some minor knocks.
