Catalogue Note

Marco Boncompagni Ottoboni enjoyed an illustrious career. King Ferdinand IV of Naples appointed him Knight of the Order of Constantine; in 1789 Pope Pius VI appointed him vice-keeper of Castel Sant'Angelo as well as his lord-in-waiting. After his accession to the dukedom of Fiano in 1803 he was appointed a senator in Rome in 1805, after the Holy City's accession to Napoleon's French Empire.

The Ottoboni coat-of-arms can be seen lower left and are carved into the chair upper right along with those of the Boncopagni-Ludovisi, princes of Piombino.

We are grateful to Dott. Francesco Petrucci for proposing the attribution to Porta and for suggesting a date of execution circa 1770.
