Description

  • Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet
  • A view of the interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft, from the main choir to the north-west, through the Mariakoor (Mary's Choir) to the transept
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Dr. Paul Otto Taubert;
His deceased sale, Melbourne, Sotheby's, 1 May 2007, lot 145 (as Attributed to Van Vliet).

Condition

The canvas has an old relining which is still sound. The painting is now dirty and the varnish layer very discoloured. The paint surface is very good overall condition with no major damages or repairs. There has been some flaking and minor paint loss along the lower margin which has been crudely repaired and this area will need to be stabilised. Inspection under ultra violet light otherwise reveals only scattered local retouchings throughout the picture, with the greatest concentrations being along the left and right hand margins. Many of the old retouchings have now discoloured and are visible to the naked eye. This lot is sold with a later ebonised wood frame with gilt ribbon twist and leaf mouldings, in reasonable overall condition.
