Description
- Willem Claesz. Heda
- A still life with a silver ewer, a silver beaker, a roemer and fruit in a porcelain dish and on a silver platter
- oil on panel
Condition
The colours are much warmer than the catalogue illustration suggests. The support consists of two vertical oak panels which are uncradled and stable. The painting has been covered with a modern masking varnish which effectively prevents any assessment of its condition under ultra violet light. Much original impasto remains, but a degree of later restoration and strengthening must be presumed beneath the varnish, particularly in the thinner parts of the design such as the flute and the background.
This lot is sold with a modern walnut veneer frame in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note
The attribution is due to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, to whom we are grateful. Drs. Meijer considers this still life to be a mature work by the artist and has dated the panel to the 1660s.
