Catalogue Note
When with C.G. Boerner in 1965, this drawing was dated by Eduard Trautschold to the mid-1630s, or shortly after, but Schnackenburg (loc. cit.) places it slightly later, in the period just before or around 1640. He compares it stylistically with other drawings in the Pierpont Morgan Library, and in the Louvre, which can be linked with paintings from this moment of Ostade's career.1
