Catalogue Note
Sumowski (loc. cit.) corrected the identification of the subject given in the 1976 sale catalogue, and confirmed the attribution to Bol, by comparison with two securely connected works by the artist.1 He dates Bol's powerful, broadly rendered drawings of this type to the mid 1640s. Another good comparison is with the fine, very Rembrandtesque drawing of Christ as a Gardener Appearing to Mary Magdalene, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which is now generally thought to date from around 1640, when Bol was still working in Rembrandt's studio.2
