Catalogue Note

The composition of the present work appears to be a loose adaptation of Joos van Cleve's Lamentation in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (see J. Hand, Joos van Cleve, New Haven and London, 2004, cat. no. 48). The Virgin here is especially close to the Magdalene depicted in van Cleve's Noli Me Tangere, located in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen (see Hand 2004, cat. no. 105).
