The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has visibly yellowed with old varnish. The panel is cradled and there are paint losses running horizontally through the center of the piece, through the left arm of Christ, and in the sky above the figure on the left. It is tempting to think that the restorations which are visible are all that exist and mostly attend to the horizontal losses mentioned above. However when the picture is fully cleaned, older retouches may become evident. A careful cleaning may well reveal a more lively paint layer with a more typical palette for the period.
