Catalogue Note

In the 1840s Erminia Frezzolini (1818-1884) was the leading Verdi soprano, regarded as best representing the modern expressive and dramatic style, not least by Verdi himself, who wrote Giselda in I lombardi for her in 1843 and the title role in Giovanna d'Arco in 1845.  She did sing the role of Leonora in Paris, but in the original language at the Théâtre-Italien in 1857.  Verdi's French revision, named Le trouvère, was eventually staged at the Paris Opéra on 12 January 1857, with the French soprano Pauline Guéymard-Lauters.
