bearing the composer's autograph title and dedication to Walter Hinrichsen: ("Frau Martha Hinrichsen für Walther (Volkslied aus Oesterreich-Schlesien)..."), the Stichvorlage of the song ("Schlaf, Kindlein, balde"), for voice and piano, written in Reger's characteristic black and red ink, on up to three three-stave systems per page, corrected and marked by and for the printer in ink and pencil, including the plate number 9451; together with an autograph letter to Martha Hinrichsen, the dedicatee's mother, enclosing the manuscript, in which Reger opines that the song is one of his "besten und originellsten Wiegelieden" and promises to write to his publishers Lauterbach & Kuhn, giving permission for "Wiegenlied" to be published immediately in Edition Peters

the manuscript 2 pages, oblong folio (c.26 x 34cms), 9-stave paper, creasing along folds, a few ink-marks from the engraver [1907]; the letter, 2 pages, 8vo, printed stationery, Leipzig, 2 October 1907, together with a letter by Reger's widow in 1923, with a printed copy of Reger's letter of 1909 to Henri and Martha Hinrichsen, complaining that 'Wiegenlied' still has not been published, and a typed explanation that Henri had not published the song whilst he still had not paid for it

This simple and attractive song reveals Reger's simple lyrical gifts, unaffected by the complexities found in his larger works; it was published by Edition Peters in 1909.  Reger's distinctive calligraphy creates a strong impression: the music in black ink, overlaid with all the markings and phrasing added by him in red.  The dedicatee Walter Hinrichsen was born on 23 September 1907, the second son of Henri and Martha Hinrichsen; from 1900 Henri was the sole manager of Peters publishing house (he died at Auschwitz in 1942).  Walter went to the United States in 1936 and established the New York branch of C.F. Peters.
