Catalogue Note
First edition of the Nestorian Chronicle, written (or rather compiled) in the early twelfth century by a monk at the court of Kievan Rus. It is an important early source for events of the time which drew on other, now lost, historical accounts.
This volume, in fact the only one published in this projected series of Russian historical texts, contains the text of Nestor's chronicle based on the fifteenth-century MS 34.5.30 in the library of the Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg; the manuscript was found in the Ipatiev monastery in the eighteenth century and is known as the Hypatian Codex, and there is another fourteenth-century manuscript known as the Laurentian Codex.
