Catalogue Note
Simon Stevin (1548-1620) was quartermaster-general in the Army of the States-General who wrote works on mathematics, bookkeeping and military science. This navigational treatise on finding ports with the aid of a compass, a translation of his original Dutch De Havenvinding (published by Raphelengius in 1599, and quickly translated into French, English and Latin, as here), also discusses methods of finding longitude at sea (see lot 153 for John Harrison's answer).
