The complete set of Voltaire's works contains, pasted into the front of the first volume, the original receipt for 72 livres paid by the subscriber of this copy, the Contesse de Matignon, specifying that 4,000 copies would be printed, this one numbered 1287, and signed on behalf of the Société littéraire by Caron de Beaumarchais, the founder of the Société. The original subscription was for 60 volumes, but 70 were produced by Beaumarchais, to which the Parisian publisher Deterville added a two-volumes index in 1801.
