Description

  • Affandi
  • Resting Man
  • Signed and dated 1966
  • Oil on canvas
  • 99 by 140 cm.; 39 by 55 in.

Condition

The painting is in good condition overall, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. There is evidence of minor wear and handling on the edges, along with associated miniscule paint loss on the top margin. However, paint layers and impastos are well-preserved. There is also indication of soft craquelures on the lower left margin. Examination under ultraviolet light appears to show indication of light retouching on the right register and along the left margin of the painting. Framed.

Catalogue Note

“…Reference to reality was never lost – it was constant and necessary, but it became increasingly referential. Beginning with themes related to poverty, the nature of the self, and humanity, his impasto working of colour had him little by little evolving beyond reality, toward the big whirling of things that be, toward a visual reflection on the cosmic nature of things. From statements on worldly matters, he shifted to contemplation.”
