Catalogue Note
“Usually he renders impressions of women in various attitudes. These return again and again: standing figures with upstretched arms or with a shawl draped over one arm, or seated figures inclining on one arm, shaded by an umbrella. In the composition the figures are positioned in little groups of two, three or more, without giving evidence of any signs of interaction. The painter observes the scene in an objective manner… Detail, in the form of flowers and leaves starts to become more important. An intense and subtle use of colour in combination with sparkling light effects remains his main force. Although his work depicts daily life in Bali, he is still an exponent of late European impressionist, which favours a gentle, earthy palette of yellow, brown, beige, and soft blue which is contrasted to red, pink, orange, and purple accents. This results in considerable dynamic tension.”
