Catalogue Note
Do Duc Thuan graduated from the École des Beaux Arts of Indochina in 1931. Not long after he graduated, the artist had been selected to join a group exhibition with renowned artists; Le Pho, Le Van De and Thang Tran Penh at the Colonial Exposition in Paris.
An old-fashioned technique of woodcut is celebrated for its sophistication and uniqueness of the 17th century. Drawing you to the 20th century style of woodcut medium, Do Duc Thuan’s painting Sur les Quais du Fleuve Rouge (On the Banks of the Red River) (Lot 280) is perhaps recognized for its immaculate carving palate. Honing the Modern Vietnamese pictorial art, the artist has created his own combination of Eastern scene depictions with Western techniques, articulating the compositions with detail and good workmanship.
