Catalogue Note
Graduating three years earlier from the École des Beaux Arts d’Hanoi, Le Pho explored the dialogue between Eastern and Western traditions in Vietnam, paving the artist as the distinguished 20th century Master of Vietnamese silk painting. Specializing in semi-Impressionist studies of figures and flowers, Le Pho’s profound and subtle beauty is stirred by delicacy and fluid transparency of color. Silk as the artist’s preferred medium, is a blend of Oriental artistry and influence of Western art.
La Petite Famille (The Small Family) (Lot 269) demonstrates Le Pho’s dedication and commitment of both East meets West traditions. Through his magnificent silk paintings, with a gentle and rich texture, he denotes love and affection through the delicate and ravishing watercolors, tracing every characteristics of his forte and exploring the relationship between la petite famille.

“In his family scenes, his paintings of mothers, Le Pho transmits to us the finest of human sentiments and sensations, the poetry of intimacy of light, of woman’s beauty and woman’s maternal tenderness, the charm of children. He barely outlines the models he uses by means of undulating lines and by subtle tones, with unvarying transparency, a delightful movement and a sure touch. The yellows and greens he employs for his decorative backgrounds lend an exquisite touch of life and movement. They are gracious evocations of joy, of happiness, of refined spirituality and the utmost sensitivity.”
