The work is in good condition overall. There are a few pin-sized holes particularly to the background area, in the upper middle (around the neck of the figure), but only apprent upon close inspection. There is a run of 6 cm long to the silk located on the upper left margin. Under ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

Awarded with a scholarship to travel and study in France, Vu Cao Dam lived and worked in Paris from 1931-1949. During his stay, he had developed an interaction with colors, simplicity and style – adding certain Oriental techniques and a touch of Western heritage. Conveying gentle and idyllic themes, Vu Cao Dam is recognized for his finely lined subjects of mother and child, women with bouquets, woman playing musical instruments and native Vietnamese women in poetic scenes.

Vu Cao Dam’s background as a sculptor is evident in the rounded, graceful and gentle contours of the figure, giving delicate features which are enhanced by the nature of the medium. The characteristics of ink and gouache on silk emanate an elusive aura, giving the painting a finer quality.

Jeune Fille en Bleu (Young Lady in Blue), illustrates the complexity and elegance of silk painting. Immersed in natural tones of leafy green and baby blue palette, Vu Cao Dam has marvelously swept the work with delicate and stunning tones – displaying the graceful gesture and unique characteristics of poetry through colors. Dreamy and peaceful, the young lady in blue is controlled with fine and sensitive brush strokes, presenting the virtuosity and self-discovery of his adaptation to foreign cultures with a touch of Vietnamese soul.
