Catalogue Note
In the late 1950s, Sunil Das studied sculpture at Rabindranath Tagore's legendary university Santinitekan in Bengal. The current works depicting horses are greatly informed by Das' background in sculptural study: imbued with a sensitivity of form and movement which capture the powerful elegance of the iconic beast.
Sketching horses at the stable of Kolkata's Mounted Police, and also at the racetrack in Kolkata, Sunil Das' passion in portraying the magnetism of the horse bordered on obsession. In his own words: "I must have done 7000 horses between 1950 and 1960. I like things which have a lot of rhythm and energy," (www.sunildas.net).
