Catalogue Note

The present work, Better Half, presents Aisha Khalid’s hallmark dense patterning, incarnated during her training in contemporary miniature technique at the National College of Arts, Lahore. While meticulously executing her repetitive, geometric symbols, Khalid deconstructs her vision of the feminine.

Virginia Whiles explains: ‘… [Khalid's] picture plane undulates echoing Escher and Mughal manuscripts simultaneously. Within it, a hidden female form is submerged wearing a burqa, becoming part of the fabric itself, enveloped and suffocated,’ (Whiles, Art and Polemic in Pakistan: Cultural Politics and Tradition in Contemporary Miniature Painting, London, 2010, p. 43).
