Catalogue Note
A contemporary of the Bombay Progressive Artists, A.A. Almelkar was deeply influenced by the impressionist bent of his colleagues N.S. Bendre and Walter Langhammer. Trained at the Sir J.J. School of Arts in Bombay, Almelkar traveled throughout India during the 1960s, focusing primarily on landscape and figurative painting. The present work from 1965, Mamalipuram Temple, presents Almelkar's sensitive and sophisticated treatment of color.
