Catalogue Note
A student of Prodosh Das Gupta, Sarbari Roy Choudhury moved to Florence in 1962 to study sculpture at the Academia de Belle Arte in 1962. In Florence, he met sculptors Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore, who enhanced his Eastern style of academic realism with an element of Western abstraction.
The present work, Skipping, presents a limber, freestanding woman captured in the midst of exuberant movement. Her wide hips delicately shift to the right as her upper body remains fixed and upright, bestowing an elegant poise to her posture. Supported by her slender left leg, the rest of her body gracefully floats in mid-air.
