Description

  • Height 31 in; width 52 in; depth 25 1/4 in
ouvrant à deux tiroirs en ceinture ; riche ornementation de bronze doré : chutes d'angles à masques et fleurs, poignées, entrées de serrure et sabots ; dessus de cuir ; ( petits manques et accidents, roulettes associées)

Condition

Illustration is slightly too clear. The varnish has turned darker. The leather top extensively scratched and torn due to shrinkage cracks. Losses to the veneer in places. The front side is slightly sun-bleached. The veneer is flacking in places. Beautiful bronzes are tarnished and rubbed. The giltbronze lockplate of the right drawer needs to be refixed. Minor traces of woodworm on the reverse of the desk top. As stated in the catalogue, castors added later. Interesting desk which would benefit from a restoration.

Catalogue Note

Nicolas Berthelmi, ébéniste reçu maître en 1735

Ce petit bureau plat de proportions assez inhabituelles s'inscrit parfaitement dans la production des ébénistes tels que Gérard, Doirat ou Lieutaud, très actifs sous la Régence.  Il est probable que Berthelmi, accédant à la maîtrise en 1735, se soit largement inspiré des réalisations de ses illustres contemporains. Ce modèle de bronze à masque de femme ornant les chutes  a été assez largement utilisé à cette période.
