Condition

There appear to be a few fine cracks, repaints and minor losses to the surface of the enamel at several places, as can be seen on the photograph: especially to the kneeling King's back and beard, some cracks and repaints to the two other King's faces, as well as the sky above their heads, Joseph's dress and Mary's face. The edges ot the plaque appear to have been retouched at several places. The backside of the plaque is copper colored with a translucent varnish with a few minor losses of varnish.

Catalogue Note

Cette composition de l'Adoration des Mages apparaît pour la première fois dès 1480-1500 dans l'œuvre du maître Pseudo-Monvaerni (au Courtauld Institute, Londres).  De plus, on la retrouve au centre d'un triptyque, attribué au Maître d'Orléans, datant vers 1480-90 (au musée d'Indianapolis). Notre émail est très proche d'une Adoration des Mages au musée de Frankfort, réalisée vers 1500 par Nardon Pénicaud (Museum für Angewandte Kunst). La composition sera reprise vers 1525-30 par son fils Jean I Pénicaud, dont une plaque est conservée à la Wallace collection (inv. n°C575).
