Description

  • gold, jade, enamel, sapphire, diamond
Centered by a navette-shaped carved and pierced jadeite plaque of foliate design, within a surround set with sugarloaf cabochon sapphires, rose-cut diamonds and black enamelwork, the frame and edges applied with black and navy blue enamel in geometric motifs, the interior fitted with a mirror, lipstick holder bearing the monogram 'C.A.M.' and two compartments engraved '34 East 36th Street, New York' and '12 Grosvenor Sq., W.I.', gross weight approximately 113 dwts, signed Cartier Paris, Londres, New York, with French assay marks.

Condition

In good condition. The jadeite plaque is translucent, medium slightly yellowish green with some lighter mottling at the edges. It shows evidence of repair at both ends of the plaque. The buff top sapphires are medium deep slightly violetish blue and range from eye-clean to lightly included, a few of the sapphires on the thumbpiece show abrasions. The diamonds are near colorless and decorative in quality. The white enamel has been repaired and is slightly thicker in some areas than in others. The mirror is intact with some spots of tarnish and the interior of the box has some scratching and denting due to wear. The lipstick holder still has some residual red lipstick inside. A French assay mark and what may be a partial workshop mark can be found on the lid's interior, beneath the mirror.
