This painting is quite unusual in its execution. The incorporated sand within the paint is not unusual, and there are other artists from this period that have used this; however, this particular painting has been incised by the artist in curved lines to denote the form of the cats. These incised lines are very noticeable, and some of them penetrate quite deeply into the paint layer. There is a very slight raised feeling to some of the edges of the deepest cuts. This painting has been examined carefully, and although some of these edges feel raised, they do not seem to indicate any future instability, in my opinion. Should this raised quality to some of the cuts be of concern, one can certainly make sure that these slightly raised ridges are properly adhered. The picture can be hung in its current condition.
