Condition

Oil on lined canvas. The picture surface is in generally good condition. Under UV light: there are two horizontal lines of inpainting that extend across the entire width of the work, each of which seems to address a previous folding of the canvas. One line goes across the chest of the sitter; the other extends across the picture surface directly below the sitter's eyes.

Catalogue Note

Zborowski was born in Poland and moved to Paris in 1914. There he met Kisling who introduced him to members of the artistic community of Montparnasse, including Modigliani, Soutine and Utrillo. Zborowski's apartment at 3, rue Joseph Bara soon became a regular meeting point for the avant garde and he quickly established himself as a leading dealer in contemporary art, in the mold of Ambroise Vollard. In 1926 he opened a gallery on the rue de Seine and was closely involved in selecting pictures for the collection of Albert Barnes in Philadelphia. Zborowski died prematurely at the age of 41.
