Condition

The first work is canvas mounted on board. The edge of the canvas is visible near the bottom edge of the frame. The picture surface is in overall good condition. Under UV, there are small scattered areas of inpaint along the edges and especially in the lower left corner. Inpaints are also scattered through the steeple at left and pinhead sized areas of inpaint are scattered throughout the sky. There is a one inch area of inpaint to the right of the left-hand steeple and a 3 inch long area of inpaint through the figures in the lower right corner. The second work is canvas mounted on board; the edge of the canvas is visible near the top edge of the frame. There is rippling and the artist’s pinhole is visible in the center of the top edge. There is minor surface dirt. Under UV, the grey background fluoresces green but there are no apparent inpaints.

Catalogue Note

"The house where I was born belonged to our family for several generations. It was...much too large even for our big family. The house was situated on a large public square, facing two churches. ...Every Saturday there was a bazaar where peasants brought and sold their products. The ...view from our windows...was a source of entertainment and [a] never forgotten delight of my earlier years. I still have a picture by a certain artist Koulikov [sic] painted from the window of our house, of the square...on Saturday Bazaar Day." --Vladimir K. Zworykin, Autobiography (manuscript, 1977), pp. 1-2.
