Condition
Canvas is strip-lined. On the reverse, there is a preparatory sketch in oil which is visible. The picture surface is in generally good condition. Under UV there is a minor speck of inpainting in the sky near the cliffs at right and another small area 1 inch from the middle of the right edge.

Catalogue Note
Johann Walter-Kurau was born in Mitau, Latvia. In 1889, at the age of 20, he entered the St. Petersburg Art Academy, where he became friendly with Kiuschenko and Vladimir Makowski. In 1897, Walter-Kurau traveled to Paris and Berlin; he exhibited with the Mir Iskusstva group, founded by Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst and Sergei Diaghilev as a Russian art movement and accompanying magazine. Walter-Jurau moved to Dresden in 1906, then onto Berlin, where he opened an atelier and art school before his death in 1932.
