Letter from Théo Van Rysselberghe to his wife Maria (Saint-Clair, 3rd January 1916): 'Mon second essai de mon self-portrait s'étant encore alourdi et figé, j'ai une troisième fois, recommencé ; mais en dessinant préalablement sur papier un dessin auquel je pourrai toujours me repérer – car il est bon, au lieu de le faire directement sur une toile – j'attends meilleur résultat de cette nouvelle tentative'.

Condition
Executed on cream wove card, taped intermittently to the overmount in three places along the upper edge. All four extreme edges are slightly time-stained due to mounting and not visible when framed. There are two pin-holes to the extreme upper right corner. Apart from some studio dirt probably assosciated to the medium, this work is in overall good condition.
Colours: Overall fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the paper tone is less red in the original.
