Catalogue Note

Prior to venturing on his own as an independent watchmaker, Phillipe Dufour worked in the house of Audemars Piguet.  From 1983 to 1988, Dufour devised the world's first Grande and Petite Sonnerie open-faced pocket watch made exclusively for the brand.  He created five examples, and the present lot is numbered 1, making it exceptionally desirable among collectors.

In accordance with all of Dufour's creations, this pocket watch was handmade with a beautiful and complex movement consisting of two barrels, both fitted to wind independently with dual recoiling clicks.  Though made for Audemars Piguet, Dufour left his artist's mark, signing the movement discreetly on the underside of the dial.  This particular example was also retailed by the illustrious British luxury brand, Asprey, enhancing its desirability and presenting a unique opportunity for collectors and patrons of the Independent Watchmakers' art to acquire a horologically important masterpiece.
