Condition

Panel is comprised of a single piece of wood, beveled on the bottom and right sides. A rather streaky varnish has been applied which is perceptible to the naked eye. A couple of retouches are the edge of the work, and a few pin dot size retouches are visible in the face, though these are quite minor. The original glazes are still intact and the painting is in overall good state. With an even varnish it will be ready to hang. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

Following her removal to Paris in 1775, Marguerite Gérard lived with her elder sister and brother-in-law, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, in their quarters in the Louvre where she swiftly became Fragonard's protégé.  By the late 1780s Gérard was an established genre painter and deemed one of the leading female artists in France, with her sentimentally idyllic scenes achieving considerable fame through the dissemination of engravings.
